Recent warnings revive mental health concerns with GLP1’s.
A good reminder for users and prescribers to be mindful this potential.
But here is something to consider-somewhere along the way, many of us started believing that weight loss would fix everything: our stress, our self-doubt, our relationships, our sense of worth…
GLP-1s can change your appetite, but they can’t answer your deeper hunger.
So the real question becomes:
What are you hungry for?
Validation, self acceptance, possibility?

Big news on the WHO announcement for the use of GLP1s for the treatment of obesity. First of all- obesity is a chronic disease marked by changes in hormones and physiology.
2. These drugs are intended for LONGTERM use. Many people want to use it as a short term “diet. Listen in to why that’s a bad call.
3. These drugs should be used in conjunction with a healthy (high protein high fiber diet) this goes without saying but many people will lose weight regardless but that too backfires in the long run (I’ve seen it happen many times in my medical practice and perhaps more on that in another video)
But all in all yay 🎉!!!

Gratitude can mean many things. Sometimes it is kindness directed inward- showing gratitude by showing ourselves grace.
So much of our stress response comes from the belief that we should be able to control everything — our bodies, our schedules, our emotions, our outcomes.
But true resilience begins with allowing.
Allowing disappointment. Allowing joy.
Allowing uncertainty. Allowing change.
In short, allowing the truth of what is, without bending life into what we think it should be.
This is grace and gratitude in action.

Gratitude can mean many things. Sometimes it is kindness directed inward- showing gratitude by showing ourselves grace.

Emotional eating is just a form of reactivity- like lashing out, compulsive drinking, shopping, working…
It comes from an underlying emotion that is driving the show. Here’s a practice
Step 1: pause before reacting
Step 2: ask yourself what is the underlying emotion- be as specific as you can. Just labeling will lessen reactivity in the amygdala
Step 3: offer yourself a self soothing practice. Hand on heart is my personal favorite.
Step 4: Feel where that emotion is in your body. Take a few breathes. Remind yourself that even if the emotion is difficult you can tolerate it. All the while breathing, offerring yourself soothing touch and words of reassurance. Remind yourself hard as it may be you can tolerate difficult emotions.
Step 4: Notice that desire to react might ease.
Remember this is a practice. You may still snap at your child or grab that Halloween candy but chances are with practice you will become less reactive and more intentional.

I’ve experienced a lot of death and dying as a physician.
I’ve done chest compressions on people who never came back to life.
I’ve called time of death on more code blues than I can remember.
I administered morphine to my grandfather in his final days on hospice.
And I reassured my cousin to go in peace minutes before her last breath.
But seeing that video shook me.
Because we are not meant to witness that kind of horrific violence, nor were we meant to just keep scrolling on by…
If you are feeling unsettled, off, distracted, irritable, distraught…
that’s your humanity speaking to you.

Connect with the humans around you. A friend, family member, mentor, confident.

Last week I dropped off my son cross country for his first year at GW.
I must admit that though it is not my first time this one was tough.
Transitions are challenging.
Even the joyful ones, the uneventful and the mundane.
There are practices that can help us experience these challenges lovingly and with self compassion.
I place my hand over my heart, take a deep breath and tell myself
This is love, this is change, this is growth- for both of us.

🏃🏻‍♀️A huge study “The Weekend Warrior Study” looked at almost 90K people who worked out only 1-2 times per week and followed them for 6.3 years and this is what the found:
💥weekend warriors were substantially more active in a shorter period-median 288 minutes!
💥weekend warriors Reduced the risk of developing 264 health conditions (daily exercisers reduced their risk of 205 in comparison ‼️)
💥weekend warriors had the same risk reduction as daily exercisers in cardiometabolic reduction including an equal reduction in risk of obesity (by almost 50%!)
