Why “Enough” is a Decision: Redefining Fulfillment in a World of More

For much of my life and career, I believed that success, happiness, and fulfillment were just beyond the next achievement, the next goal, the next milestone. But what I’ve come to realize—and what I explore in Hungry for More—is that “enough” is a decision, not a destination.
We live in a culture that constantly tells us to strive for more—more success, more productivity, more recognition. And while growth is essential, this endless pursuit often leaves us feeling empty rather than fulfilled. So, how do we break free from this cycle and learn to embrace “enough”?
The Illusion of “More”
I see this all the time, not just in my patients but in my own personal journey. We tell ourselves:
“I’ll be happy when I lose those last 10 pounds.”
“I’ll feel successful when I get that promotion.”
“I’ll finally be fulfilled when I reach my next big goal.”
But once we achieve those things, the feeling of satisfaction is fleeting. Suddenly, there’s another goal, another measure of success, another standard to meet. The truth is, if we don’t make the conscious decision to feel enough right now, we never will.
Why “Enough” Feels So Elusive
Why is it so hard to feel like we’ve arrived at “enough”? In my work, I’ve found three common reasons:
1️⃣ Comparison Culture – We measure our lives against curated versions of other people’s success, forgetting that our paths are unique.
2️⃣ Fear of Stagnation – We worry that if we embrace where we are now, we’ll stop growing.
3️⃣ Lack of Self-Compassion – We are our own toughest critics, always demanding more from ourselves instead of recognizing our progress.
But here’s what I’ve learned: choosing “enough” doesn’t mean settling. It means recognizing your worth in this moment, while still allowing space for growth.
How to Make “Enough” a Daily Practice
So, how do we shift our mindset and choose enough? Here are a few practices I’ve embraced and share in Hungry for More:
✔ Redefine Success on Your Terms – What does fulfillment truly look like for you? Not what society says. Not what your friends are doing. Not what social media portrays. Take time to define it for yourself.
✔ Celebrate Small Wins – Stop waiting for the big achievement to feel worthy. Every small step matters. Honor your journey.
✔ Practice Gratitude for the Present – Instead of focusing on what’s missing, shift your attention to what’s already here. Gratitude is one of the most powerful tools for creating a sense of abundance.
✔ Be Mindful of the “More” Mentality – The next time you catch yourself thinking, “I’ll be happy when…”, pause. Ask yourself, “What is enough for me right now?”
Final Thoughts: You Are Already Enough
The moment you decide that you are enough—not because of what you’ve accomplished, but because of who you are—is the moment you find peace. In Hungry for More, I explore how embracing enoughness can shift our relationship with food, success, and self-worth.
